Welcome to another EOM PP INSPO

(End of Month Personal Post - for Inspiration to "Live Life" #4)

I like keeping it real and the reality for me is this:

The month of April...

It's always a little tough for me -

as I recall the loss of my little girl, Anna Grace,

and I also remember my mum, who died in April, just last year.

But I have discovered a secret I want to share:.

Joy is a choice

and life is best - lived

and living it well - is also a choice.

Despite our circumstances,

We can choose joy

During the month of April, this is what I got up to.

May you be inspired and encouraged by my personal post today.

So, during April, I ...

Celebrated Jesus at Easter time at a beautiful church in Richmond called Richmond Baptist Church.

There was dancing and singing and I was uplifted as i was reminded, I am not alone.

Went to the Dentist - THREE TIMES!

How sucky is that? How grateful I am though for things like Tooth Mousse!

Received a letter from my granddaughter.

Yes, snail mail is still alive and still has the power to uplift a heart so much!

Scored some free "MICKEY MOUSE" print PJ's for her sleep over birthday party I've been invited to!

One of her faves! #winning!

Tried my hand at Archery! (Nelson)

I wasn't very good at it but, it was a lot of fun trying something new!

Said RIP to my dryer - this dryer was over 25 years old (so faithful)

Found an ‘as new’ dryer for cheap from a lovely couple that chatted for an hour over a car they'd restored from the early 1900's!

I love divine meetings like this.

People are fascinating!

Stayed overnight in a ghost town called Waiuta.

I highly encourage you visit this place. Walking through this town and discovering it's rich history was mesmerizing.

At night time, I looked up at the stars and was equally mesmerized.

Those stars were there before that town ever was!

I also counted more than 16 satellites!

Got a job working with Primary school aged kids.

As such as I have played tree chasey, Jenga, Twister and playdough!

Was finally able to afford to book flights to visit my family soon, by faith, (petrol pending - eek.)

Held a pony club dinner at The Stables (see what I did there) after my team of motorcycle enthusiasts successfully WON at an Equestrian Hobby Horse competition!

(we turned our hobby horses into motorbikes lol!)

The Stables in Richmond do a yummy, cheap roast and dessert on Tuesday nights btw!

Went to a local writers group.

There I shared my recent magazine article and met someone new - a new upcoming local author who has an inspiring new idea for a children's book that has the potential to save kid's lives!

Bought a couple of handfuls of books about Kiwis for my Aussie Grandkids.

They were only $1 at The Warehouse!

Wrote 5 chapters of my upcoming book, He is Faithful from A to Z Volume 2!

Boarded a train called The Marlborough Flyer from Blenheim to Kaikoura - to celebrate a 93yo Birthday Girl!

Jumped my fence to watch a Dog Show

Have you ever seen an Australian Shepherd?

My goodness, I was in love!

I did feel sorry for the poodles with hairless bottoms though if I'm honest.

Helped wash a stinky rubbish truck.

Some things are not fun but ...

some things you just do, for love, right?

Planted some vegetables

because the Pukekos pulled out all of my last crop!

Saw “Michael” at the movies

This is a MUST SEE!!! for any Michael Jackson fan. Silky Otter Cinema in Richmond has cheap seats and bottomless popcorn on Mondays!

I was so excited I even moon walked out on the cinema floor after the movie!

Remembered my Anna Grace,

my little girl that was buried in 2007

She is never forgotten. Her life mattered.

Her book "The Baby Who Went Straight to Heaven" is her legacy.

This precious book is available at the

Richmond Library and Richmond Paper Plus

for any young children wading through grief that need comforting x

Remembered my mum who died one year ago.

I was very fortunate that despite our extremely rocky relationship,

her last seven weeks saw me by her side witnessing some amazing things: incl.

Miracles - in her heart.

I devoted a podcast to her on the April May Gems Radio Show.

Walked most mornings, slightly frozen

(my Australian blood needs beanies and gloves, even in April!)

Got an email from a National bookstore,

requesting some of my books to consider placing on their shelves. They own seven stores across New Zealand.

I was also invited to have a coffee with the CEO next time he is in Nelson.

(I hope he doesn't mind having coffee with such an ordinary person!)

Reached out and received much needed prayers, because truth be told,

I had a meltdown - and my heart hurt!

Prayers went up and healing came down

For this I am eternally grateful.

Quite possibly prayed for you…

Welcome to another

EOM PP INSPO

(End Of Month Personal Post Inspiration…)

Let’s be real. Its not always fun and games. Some days are darker than others!

This is a gorgeous pic of my husband and his old rusty ute at kai teri teri at sunrise last month.

But let's face it:

Life is not always so pretty is it?!

I also took a snapshot of where I miserably sat one day physically (for two long hours) but also mentally (for “more than two” mind-battling days) because some days … my life is hard.

My mind, a battlefield!

I especially think so when I’m involved in my God-kind of ministry! I do believe the devil hates my guts!

I’m grateful for prayer support and for the encouragement God always sends my way though (often through random strangers - so thank you random community page outreacher's!)

This is what else I got up to in March. I …

Had 3 fabulous days on camp with my God Squad from my local Church. I highly recommend these -

Good for the soul!

Sat on a picnic bench to watch a Sunrise. Trust me, it was early! And it was freezing! But was it worth it? Absolutely!

Swam at the beach - at sunrise!

Videoed my man in a “circle of fish!” He was bobbing around at Split Apple Rock and a school of fish literally began to circle all around him. Epic video!

Nervously went on a boat -

I hate boats!

Ate a real fruit ice cream - trust me, it calms the "I hate boats" nerves.

Saw Split Apple Rock for the very first time (I've only been here for 4 years!)

Watched the latest Elvis movie (then came home and binged on Priscilla interviews...Lisa Marie... Michael Jackson...more Elvis...

Where does it end?!!

Ordered new reading glasses (ugh) only because I'm getting o...wiser!

Had my books accepted into 2 shops (Thank you Purebooks in Timaru & my local Paper Plus store in Richmond.)

Watched “I can only imagine 2” - Thank you to Nelson State Cinemas - who politely ordered it in especially after I emailed asking nicely.

Received a belated Valentines card from my granddaughter - who also drew her Nanny doing a handstand

I can do a handstand btw!

Motorbiked for 20 hours straight over 1600km - eating Pi-es - this was a certified ride for the US 14th of March (3.14)

Attended a beach wedding !!

Watched a North Island sunset over kai iwi

Walked inside an epic “1906” Mansion at Bushy Park while in Whanganui

Journeyed a road to nowhere and back (ok we were a bit lost) but…
Found an abandoned bus to snap that was half buried in farmland.

Met Thomas the tank engine - he was at a park.

Always stop at a park (you never know who you might meet!) and have a swing!

Went to a liquorice factory - bought the tshirt (not really but i did get a mug!)

Had a second article accepted & published in a national magazine about my journey as an author - you can read it here.

Celebrated a besties birthday and wished a special daughter in law a happy 21st

Googled a lot about Chuck Norris.

Chuck Norris loved Jesus like a real man. (not a joke!)

Randomly researched mum's who gave birth lots of times (one lady did it 69 times! what the actual truth?!)

Jumped my fence to watch a vintage car race at the Showgrounds! (Oops did i say that out loud.)

Had my first motorbike article published in a Motorbike Magazine. I called it "A Pillion’s Perspective.”

Worked a few shifts as a bar maid (it was a once off but I loved it!)

Performed a fun skit for 150 people - on a fake pony (and my team actually won the competition!)

Saw a whole paddock of real ponies while out walking

Finally got to let my cat outside after weeks indoors after she had broken her toe

(Seriously, has your cat ever done this?)

Studied the book of Leviticus!

Spent a lot of days & dollars at coffee shops writing “He is Faithful Volume 2”

Got an offer from a traditional publisher, keen to publish my preteen book - Pure as Gold ! Now that news really is gold!

I also began a whole new range of hormone balancing concoctions (double ugh)

Hello Facebook Friends | Followers of all things AMG (April May Gems)

Here is my second shot of my hope to inspire you to...

LIVE LIFE

with my (albeit belated) "EOM PP" (End Of Month Personal Post)

Sorry - yes it's a little late as February is long gone but as ya'll can see - I tend to get a tad busy!

May my words always be an inspiration to you to -

take life with both hands and live it!

(even on sucky days)

During my February...

My sucky days ( let's get them outa the way first ) included :-

- menopausal madness,

- remedy researching for how to cure my sleeplessness saga and

- facetime tears, missing my fam over in Aus

BUT I also managed to do these things...

I ...

Motorbiked across 26 bridges in a day (and I hate bridges!)

Became a secret spy for an outdoor Xscape game (we had one job -“Save Our Town”- epic mission fail-sorry whole town!)

I highly recommend the Richmond XSCAPE rooms btw

Joined the circus (not really, but we did go to it!) The human cannonball was my fave!

Motorbiked passed the sea at Kai Teri Teri on a very hot day (yes we jumped in!)

Walked through the tunnel at Kowatiri - built in 1923!

Had a post tunnel-walk dip in the cold river (gosh, what’s wrong with us?)

Cried on Valentine’s Day (overwhelmed with the ol' ‘I feel so special’ tears) - My man is a bit of a keeper.

Motorbiked along Queen Charlotte and stopped in at the pub there that lets you chalk on their walls!!

Nursed a poor broken pussycat (how does one dislocate one’s feline toe?)

Poor Smoochie Moochie kitty

Sailed overseas (look it was a 5 minute ferry ride for a picnic but that’s still over-seas right?) Nelsonites - if you have not done it already - go visit:-

HaulaShore island - just jump on the Nelson Ferry!

Got lassoed in to write & choreograph an ‘equestrian skit’ (performance is on 27th March - only in front of about 160 people - eek!)

Came home to find the equestrian team of hobby horses (and unicorns) in my bed!

Lol my hubby is too funny!

Bought a remote control poo ?! ikr who does that - its actually hilarious!

Walked with a friend and ate a sugary secretion from a sap sucking insect straight off the tree! (aka honeydew - sounds gross - tastes delish!)

Celebrated my first born son turning 30!

Celebrated a lovely friends 60th - if you haven't been, I highly recommend:-

Joe's Garage, in Richmond

Flew to Auckland for a Tattoo (that would be the Epic Edinburgh Tattoo) a once in a lifetime opportunity - a gifted ticket that I do not take for granted!

Strolled over to a very cool car show at the AnP showgrounds - sadly they wouldn't let me take the Mustang home.

Watched the 2026 Wuthering Heights movie - tbh I very much prefer to hear Kate bush sing about it! (We came home and watched the 1939 version on YouTube - and thought it was way better!)

Wrote a lot ! (my best effort was two chapters in one day - of He is Faithful from A to Z Volume 2 - coming out this year hopefully!!!)

I am often at "Vanilla Bean Cafe" in Richmond, early in the mornings so come say, 'Hi!'

Submitted two articles - for two different magazines.

Waited patiently for a publisher response to my pre-teen manuscript - Pure as Gold (also hoping to publish this in 2026)

Absolutely thrashed my husband at Crowns! (Straight tally of 0’s all the way baby!)

*seriously get that game y’all.

Saw a hilarious wholesome movie called HOLY DAYS - highly recommend!

Ate too much and exercised too little (I'm working on changing these! - maybe NEXT month.)

Read my Bible every day. I'm currently in Leviticus - looking for Jesus (and finding Him!) in the old books.

Lifted LOTS of prayers up for lots of people and sang lots of songs. I especially love Project of Love - check him out here .

And ... that's about all folks.

I am truly thankful for these two reviews in the February - March edition of a NZ National Magazine (NZCW) ... (it's my first mag review ever!)

April May’s book is an autobiography with a difference as it’s not written in chronological order,

but rather in a series of chapters presented in a random fashion with each bearing a letter of the alphabet.

The theme of the 79 chapters grouped under the letters A to Z is the faithfulness of God during an often turbulent life

with challenges and problems of all kinds.

Under the letter A in chapter one for example, the author deals with Abuse, Anger, Addictions and Abandonment,

revealing her troubled childhood and youth.

The chapters vary in length and content and can be read in any order.

They deal with April May’s difficult times of hardship, failed businesses, financial debt, marriage problems, family challenges,

the loss of a baby girl, along with significant dreams, premonitions, and unexpected miracles.

April writes with honesty and openness and is passionate about sharing her life stories and experiences

to encourage and inspire others to believe in God and trust Him wholeheartedly in every situation of life.

Though claiming to be ‘a very ordinary person’, the stories of her life are a powerful testimony of God’s unconditional love,

patience, goodness, and faithfulness. I believe this book will challenge, confront, inspire, and strengthen

the faith of readers and give them hope.

From her own tragic experience of losing her stillborn baby girl (Anna Grace) in 2007,

April May has written this children’s book to help young ones cope with the sad situation where a mother goes into hospital

to have her baby but comes home without one.

She writes:

‘My hope is that these little ones be comforted and know their sibling is safe and loved –and so are they.

With bright, colourful illustrations, it’s a book full of hope and will help children as they grieve but also aid their healing

by drawing them close to the One who loves them the most.

What on earth is a PP and an EOM I hear you ask and how can it be inspiring? And is that my motorbike - yes it is! (well, i sit on the back...but it's way cooler back there!)

So...

I am an adrenaline junkie and I LOVE motorcycle rides!

I'm sure that a lot of you who follow my page might not have even known that.

You wanna know something else?

As a writer, I used to fall asleep in my accounting class and I don't think I learned one single thing, except maybe how to graffiti on my desk with a cool art-liner (true story!)

But, one thing I did learn (when I had to 'book keep' for a home based business) was the term EOM!

So, what does EOM stand for?

Well, in case you didn't know (like me), it stands for "End of the Month!"

So, what does PP stand for?

Well, tbh ( sorry, another abbreviation )

To be honest, I made it up.

It stands for " Personal Post! "

I was thinking the other day, as a writer, as an author, as " April May "...

I wondered if people out there scrolling through social media realise that I am actually a real person, not just a link insert-er on a community page!

I mean, it's true - I sit down five days a week typing out blogs and chapters for books and articles and skits and poetry and podcasts (I do all of those things btw ( sorry another abbreviation - I promise I will stop now! )

I actually write every single day, from around 8am to around 4pm - Monday to Friday (and sometimes even on the weekends!)

But - I also LOVE to have fun.

I love to LIVE LIFE and I'd love to INSPIRE you to do that too.

SO...

I decided, you know what -

I am gonna do a PP at the EOM

Every month!

So YOU can be inspired to LIVE life.

It will be on my website via a blog and uploaded as a link on my page

I understand and can appreciate that different seasons hold different opportunities in regards to what LIVING LIFE at its fullest looks like...

I have been the teen party-goer, the young mum of one, two... then, the older mum with a handful of teenagers, a 'boy mom' a divorcee, a newlywed and now I'm a Nanny!

And as a Motorcycling loving, full-time writing Nanny, the list below was my EOM antics for January (I know its a bit late - but it's still February right?)

I hope it inspires you!

In JANUARY...

I re-emerged from a 6 week ‘Facebook fast’ - it felt fabulously freeing ! And the absence of annoying ads, and addictive scrolling was refreshing!

I taught myself how to solve a RUBIX CUBE! - Fun Fact - I am an eighties girl and I always thought it was just a trick! Turns out - it's not!

I hung up my headphones re my radio show after being on air for 2yrs and 9mo!

I cried too many tears when feeling overwhelmed, rejected, hormonal or lonely.

I went camping in a tent right on a river and was asked,

“ Is this your permanent home ?”

(errr... no!)

I saw some epic crashes and literally ate dust at the speedway.

I turned pages of a Bible at the Salvos that was 135 years old!

I read my own Bible every day!

I motorbiked to the northern most tip of the south Island of NZ on the West Coast - epic! I saw the most ferocious ocean I’ve ever seen in my life there.

I explored all kinds of nooks n crannies in a giant cave, unguided (trust me it was very dark and scary)

I watched Hamnet and Song Sung Blue at the movies

I experienced real adventure riding at its best and crossed a few precarious rivers!

I also met a pregnant goat hunter on the top of one of those hills and I discovered some very cool, old condemned cottages too

I was very grateful (and surprised) to read an amazing review of two of my books in a national magazine

I took a pic of a cute web only to realise it had about 1000 spiders in it!

I was unexpectedly contacted by a traditional publisher interested in my pre-teen treasure book Pure As Gold

I swam in a ffffreezing river and walked over it on a terrifying “only-one-at-a-time” swing bridge! (and I hate bridges!)

I proudly listened to and watched my granddaughter sing the whole ABC song

AND

I joyfully adored an ultrasound of my first ever baby grandson !!!

(They both live overseas so I am super grateful for video apps on my phone and instant photos of the 21st century!)

When Someone Asks You, "So, What Do You Do?"

Someone asked me yesterday and I was like ... "duhhh..." (and then I gave them a dumb answer.)

Yesterday, someone asked me,

“What do you do?”

I replied, “I’m a full-time author.”
“Ooh!” they exclaimed, (as though I was some kind of somebody)
“So, what do you write about?”

Without even thinking, I just gave them some stupid answer.

Tonight, in the middle of the night I woke up and wished how I could go back and give them a different one.

I’d say…

“I write about things that have the potential to change a person’s life,

not just their life here on earth but their life after death.”

Yep. “That’s way better!” I thought.

Then, I remembered a young woman I once met.

A reader.

She drove ten hours to meet me at my local coffee shop so she could tell me her story.
She wanted to tell me how a part of my story, changed her life.

She was living at a drug rehab and was seriously contemplating ending it, her life that is, when she looked up and in front of her was a bookcase.

On that bookcase she saw the spine of my first book.

She got up, looked at the picture on the cover and was intrigued by the tulip.

She started reading and suffice to say, hope was imparted into her heart and her life was revived.

She called her mum and her mum came with her to the coffee shop to meet with me.
Her mum belonged to a ‘writer’s group’ and she asked me,

“Where did you learn to write so well?”

I can honestly say,

it took every part of me to not choke on my coffee or spurt it out all over myself.

I didn’t learn to write!
I didn’t really learn anything at all, academically speaking.

I went to fourteen primary schools, a handful of high schools and left at aged fourteen, on a quest to learn instead, how to survive, how to be street smart and how to find love - in all the wrong places.

Eventually,

LOVE found me.

I was 25, a young mum of a toddler and a baby.

Oh, I had it altogether it would seem.

Well, to anyone looking in from the outside.

But truthfully, I was a broken mess.

I had a regressed memory resulting from childhood trauma and family dysfunction that was about to come and haunt me!

I would not have survived myself if it had not been for Love breaking through into my life, changing my heart and my destiny!

Eleven years later, after the death of one of my own children, that same Love held me.
That Love gave me hope.
So much so that I wanted to tell the whole world about it.
So, I decided to write it down.

Those 32 pages would make up one chapter in a book of 79!

A book, that a young lady at a drug rehab would pick up and have her life saved through.

“I just write what I experience.”

I sheepishly explained to that young woman’s mum that day.

I just love to tell people about how my life changed and how it continues to,

how my heart continually receives healing and hope and how it is possible for their lives and their hearts too.

And I’m still doing it, ten years later.
I’m writing these experiences all down so that others can know.

I wrote them down for adults, through,

“He is Faithful from A to Z” (published 2016, 2022)

I wrote for little children through,

“The Baby Who Went Straight to Heaven” (published 2022)

I even tried writing these experiences through a love-story novel,

"Petals in the Wasteland” (published 2023 - currently FREE!)

- admittedly that was a total disaster - I am not a novelist! -

It is currently being redeemed through a

“He is Faithful from A to Z Volume Two” – (to be published 2026*)

I’m now writing for young people (pre-teens) through,

“Pure as Gold” (to be published 2026*)

I’m even attempting to write for those who love poetry through,

“Life in a Rhyme, Line Upon Line” (to be published 2026/2027*)

Oh, how I wish I could go back and tell that ‘someone’ from yesterday what I actually write about.

Maybe, hopefully, they will read this and know.

As for me, I think I’ll go back to bed now.

I have a chat with an incredible young woman named Petra, who felt the call to travel from the cold snowy mountains of the South Island of New Zealand to the vast, rugged, very hot desert-wilderness known as the Kimberley Region, situated in the far north of Western Australia.

The people in the aboriginal communities in this region lack hope and have minimal access to mental health care and sadly, it has

one of the worst suicide rates in the entire world!

Petra shares about the torment going on inside the building, that her and her very small team rocked up at as well as the incredible transformation that happened within just a few short days.

How did this happen?

And how does one trust God for $7,500 to arrive in a week so one can book flights for such a trip?!

“What if I’ve got it wrong?” What if so-and-so doesn’t like their present?” “What if that person rocks up at the family gathering?” “What are we actually responsible for?” “What are we actually in control of?”

And, “What (or rather, Who,) is available to help me with my New Year’s resolution?”

Then, there’s that other Eve!

The one that we blame, for every hurt and suffering in the world since day dot!

Pre Christmas stress! It's real right?

In this Pre Christmas Episode (64) of the April May Gems Radio Show ...

The kind of peace that’s unspeakable -

The kind that brings stillness and quietness even if you're in the middle of a raging life storm!

Is There a Case for Christ?

Well, I had a few conversations recently and interesting questions to support the view of, "NO THERE IS NOT" came firing …

Questions like this:-

“When I die, if I want to go to hell and have beers with my mates, what concern is that of yours?”

“If I have my truth and you have your truth, can’t we just be cool with that?”

And ofc the ultimate:

“Where is God?”

“Is there a Case for Christ” is NOT a question about religion.

Religion, in my opinion, is something I never want to be a part of and I say that because of my experience.

A certain religious ritual that I had no say in, left me with a disability.

I did not have the ‘ability’ to receive grace from God!

Instead, I was caught in the trap of feeling like I had to be a good girl to have God like me and if I didn’t be a good girl then I would probably just be struck down with a bolt of lightning one day!

Well, I couldn’t be a good girl and even if I tried really hard, I knew deep down that I’d never be good enough, for such a ‘Holy God!’

So, I just flipped the switch and became a bad girl and went on looking for love in all the wrong places.

Thankfully, that Holy God rocked up in my life one day when I was in my 20s in a totally supernatural way!

He showed me that He did love me, despite my years of wickedness and rebellion and He showed me that all my ‘badness’ could be wiped clean if I just did one thing. It was simple – but it wasn’t easy for me.

In this E pisode (63) on the April May Gems Radio Show I tackle those fired questions and I ask one myself.

Is there a Case for Christ?

Is there a reason we should want Jesus in our world, in our neighborhood, in our family or in our schools?

The One who brings healing and hope, rest and restoration?

Well, because He brings restoration of relationship – not religion, I believe the answer is Yes.

Finding What's Lost

Have you ever lost something valuable?

I have!

I have lost lots of valuable things...

- An apple watch given to me for my birthday,

- Air pods that were a Christmas present,

- A diamond cross necklace - also a gift,

- Even a wedding ring, not once but twice! (I now have a wedding ring tattoo!)

- Three different cats (and an expensive cat tracker!) and

- Even a valuable friend!

Did I ever find any of these things?

Yes! All of them.

How?

I had help!

Do you feel lost?

Lost in life? Lost in your own thoughts? Lost on the inside? Lost in the midst of this world shouting at you to ...

“Go this way…!” or “Go that way…?”

I can assure you, there is a man known as “The Way” and He thinks you are so valuable.

You are valued. You are very precious and very much loved, by the One who created you.

You are worthy of love and worthy of being found.

I was once lost. Incredibly lost.

I’m not anymore.

STAY IN YOUR LANE !!

We, too, should run the race that is set before us and never quit.

(Hebrews 12 - Easy to Read Version)

Staying in my lane implies that I have my own one, right? A personal lane? Designed, especially for me?

Well, what is it? How do I find it?

Where does it lead?

Is this lane clear? Or, are there hurdles involved? Will there be other surprise obstacles? If so, what are they? And how do I overcome them? Or, remove them?

What if they are too big to get over or too hard to get out of my way?

Is there help available?

Maybe a hand?

And if I persevere and endure, all the way to the end ...

Do I get a prize?

And what of those many helpful voices that are being yelled at me from the sidelines and from the crowd? (Not to mention the unhelpful ones.)

A lot of yelling can be awfully confusing!

Which one should I listen to?

And what of the others in this race, of whom I am so conscious that they are seemingly advancing, on either side of me?

By the way, what’s with the blindfold? I can’t see where I’m going.

Such is life!

How often do we feel like we are blinded, trusting in a prize we so often cannot see.

Unclear of the right direction we ought to go, unclear of who to follow, conscious of people right beside us who appear to be succeeding in their lane.

Voices of many, yelling out at us, confusing voices, discouraging voices, sometimes creating so much noise that we can’t distinguish anymore what is truth and what is yelled out to trick us and make us stumble, not to mention the obstacles thrown into our path, set to make us fall.

Honoring a Real Baby Who Went Straight to Heaven (for P.I.C.L.A Month)

What is P.I.C.L.A. Month? - October!

October, is the International Month of "Pregnancy, Infant, and Child Loss, Awareness."

Have you ever known someone who was joyfully pregnant but then the unthinkable happened ...

their precious baby just …

died?

October is International Pregnancy, Infant and Child Loss Awareness Month. It's a time to remember and support families who have been through the tragedy of having to say goodbye, too soon, to their little one.

Why does awareness for this even matter?

Well, it aims to break the taboo of ‘not talking about it’ and promotes the action of starting a conversation! It also acknowledges the significant impact of such a loss. (I can attest - its HUGE!) And it highlights the fact that it’s more common than most people think.

I’ll give you just a few stats from here in New Zealand:-

Almost 6 in one thousand, was the infant mortality rate last year here in New Zealand. So, babies who died within their first year of life.

That’s roughly 2 little kiddos in a kiwi towns primary school of around 250 students such as, Wakefield Primary School, that didn’t make it and have left behind a whole handful of grieving family members.

Almost 8 in a thousand babies were recorded as fetal deaths, so these babies died during their developing stages, up until birth.

That’s 1 in just over 100 families. You know, 100 people would rock up to a wedding, so that’s one couple at an event like a wedding, that likely buried their own child.

And almost 1 in 80 were recorded as perinatal death, so, either a baby in the later term of the pregnancy or very early on in their lives after they were born ... died. These included neonatal deaths, so little babies who died within a month of being born and babies who sadly arrived into this world stillborn, those very much wanted little ones who never got to take their first breath.

I can tell you from first hand experience that, that is devastating for a family, and the grief can last a very, very long time. Not just for the mum and the dad but for the siblings too.

Please, acknowledge that family. Or that mum, or those siblings, that you know, THIS MONTH.

When the Death of a Stranger Rattles Us - Like Charlie Kirk.

Charlie Kirk - Did I Know You?

I know this much...

I remember the day Princess Di died and man, I cried a lot!

Also, watching Michael Jackson's funeral brought me to a sobbing mess!

Plus, I wailed at the back of a cinema during the Fast and furious 7 movie, as the final scene came on as a tribute to Paul Walker!

As for Charlie Kirk, when I read that he had been killed, I felt like I went into shock - a state of sheer disbelief. It was as though I’d just received news that my own brother had died.

Did I know Charlie Kirk personally?

Did I know any of these people personally?

No!

So, why did their deaths rattle me so much?

Did they rattle you? What about when a close relative or loved one died?

Why does death, rattle us?

Even the death of a stranger like Charlie Kirk or even Elvis?

Well, I share two of my reasons right here on this episode of the April May Gems Show

From Dire to Doctor? Encouragement is a Super Power that can change a life!

What good is encouragement? Seriously, what can words do?

Can they cause a poor Filipino boy, the youngest of eight siblings, with one grieved and penniless parent, struggling to provide for him, to follow his dreams, from dire to doctor?

Let me ask a different question.

Have you ever seen those moving videos of ‘Sponsor Mum's’ meeting up for the first time with their now grown-up ‘Sponsor child,’ from that third world country and the touching, tear-jerking story of encouragement, success, and achievement, that goes along with it?

Well, that was me and that little Filipino boy (turned “young man with a degree now”) in Christchurch just last weekend.

Encouragement is actually a SUPER POWER!

It empowered that boy over many years, to believe that he could in fact achieve the cry of his heart to "help people".

Encouragement empowered me too - on that very same weekend, to embark upon writing a poetry book!

In Honour of a Kind Kiwi Whose Grave Aint Gonna Hold Him Down and Whose Treasures Aint Gonna Rust

"If You walked outa the grave, I'm walkin' too!"

That is a lyric, penned in 1934, by a dying 12 year old boy called Claude.

It's also from a really awesome newer version of the song and the YouTube clip that goes along with it, that my husband stumbled on the other day, by North County Music and it has quickly become one of my most favorites to watch and listen to.

It's called "Aint No Grave" and the song and the clip got me thinking of a kind, kiwi man that died, just the other day...

He was a man who, despite enduring quite a number of unfortunate events, that I doubt you would even want to wish upon your worst enemy, he developed a soft heart, a kind heart, a generous heart as well as a heart after One who walked out of a grave.

That, then reminded me of something Jesus once talked about, speaking of generosity -

The day of the separation of the sheep and the goats.

Have you ever heard of this day that is coming?

The day when all people will be separated into two groups known as the sheep and the goats?

I’m convinced, there will be such a day and I know what side I want to be on, but ...

it will all depend on my generosity!

Generosity is an interesting topic that is talked about a whole lot in the 'good book' and it states very clearly that it certainly has its rewards. "Eternal bliss," being just one of them, as well as treasures that store up, don't rust, can't be destroyed or stolen by thieves.

In this episode, I wanted to honour the kind, kiwi man who died just the other day, whom I believe would have been overwhelmed by the treasures in store for him, all because he was generous, even though at times he had very little and even though he suffered a number of unfortunate circumstances that would likely cause many a heart to harden, yet his heart became soft and kind and remained bent on being a giver, right to the end.

I also share of the 12 year old boy who gave us this great song, while dying of the deadly, contagious disease known as white death (tuberculosis) and I play his song on this episode too.

I also share my favourite saying –

" Whatever is intended to bring harm to us, can be turned around and used for good, even for the good of others. "

Letting Your Broken History Decompose and Push Up a Rose!

Do you have a broken history?
What if I told you that you can let it be dead and buried and as it decomposes, it can push up some beautiful roses.

(That’s a paraphrased line I stole from Switchfoot’s front man by the way but I love it. )

Do you sometimes feel that you had to grow up too fast?

Did you forget somewhere along the line, what it felt like to just be ... childlike and carefree?

To have fun and enjoy life and each of its special wonder-filled moments along the journey, just like a little kid?

Have you a desire to stay present, in the present - the ever-present gift of … the moment, along the way?

How many of us are so busy chasing an arrival destination that we miss out on the enjoying, I mean really enjoying, the journey?
Being present in the moments, especially special moments of wonder, which some of us even need to create actually, amidst the busyness of life is so important.

In this episode I share a song by Switchfoot's front man, Jon Foreman and he sings,

“My broken history decomposes, but it's a part of me that's pushing up roses. Let my failures be fertilizer, for the flowers on my tomb. I'm a desert in bloom…"

Can you relate?

Can you say that the failures in your life can be seen by others, as flowers now?

Something beautiful stemming from that old tomb of, who you used to be?

Be encouraged. You can have exactly that. New fresh roses in your life, where dead things got buried.
Because it is possible for new roots to be planted inside your heart and beautiful flowers can stem from the old failures.

It's who you know.

Also in this episode I share a true story of a stolen innocence that was restored, youth that was renewed and a real freedom that was found, that included dancing like a bird that you would not want to cage. It's all because of Dandelions* and a man, of a very different kind, that I met when I was 25.

I hope this all encourages you and the songs too, a ballad, a country hit from Zach Williams and an interesting rap piece from a yoghurt shop kid.

Is Jesus Even Coming Back?

I am certainly no theologian and I’m far from ‘religious’ but I have definitely had more than my fair share of what I call super natural experiences, including ones that have unquestionably cemented in me that – Yes! Jesus is most definitely coming back!

Well, when?

Hmmm...now, that’s a big can of worms because apparently there are all sorts of opinions out there, even amongst those who are super smart and theologically educated (unlike myself.)

So, how can I be sure of this ‘Return of the Christ?’ and Am I ready?

These are just a couple of questions I know I can answer with absolute confidence.

What about you?

Be encouraged that there are steps you can take to be sure and ready as well.

I understand though, that there is sure to be some of you out there that (like me, not too long ago) to even think about such a thing may bring a feeling of dread and fear.

You don’t need to fear. There’s a perfect love that can drive that far away! (1 John 4:18)

For others, it may bring a temptation to ignore the question completely, even blatantly oppose the very statement that Jesus said that He will in fact return one day, and on a day when we all least expect it!

Maybe you’re reading this and borderline considering to render this fact a fairy tale and are teetering on the decision to shut this blog page down right about now...

Well, can I encourage you?

On this episode of the April May Gems Radio Show / Podcast I don't go down any theological, or even controversial paths. I just simply talk about what I know, relating to my own personal encounters and you can make of them what you will.

You can believe me or not but I will say this:-

What I share today on EPISODE 55 absolutely happened to me !

As a result, I unquestionably believe that Jesus is not only a very real person, that walked this earth many years ago, doing good, healing people, setting people free from demonic oppression and mental disorders, saving lives, raising people from the dead even and most importantly saving souls from eternal damnation - and I also believe that He is doing all of those things still - but these encounters that I’ve had, have assured me that ...

- Yes ! He is definitely coming back

- Some of us will actually meet Him in the air as the bible states and

- He meant what He said when he stated to his disciples that He was “going to prepare a place” for his people and “will return to take them to be with Him…”

I love the part where Jesus even told the thief on the cross, who was hanging there, deservedly, right next to Him when he was about to die that “today” that thief would be with Him, in paradise.

A thief! Why?

Well, I can only see it’s because of just one reason. Just one. That he believed.

And that is all that really matters, for any of us.

Going on a "Crying Out Loud" Walk. Ok... Who Cares?"

Have you ever gone for a walk that turned into a 'yelling at the sky, nobody cares, crying out loud’ walk? I have. Very recently!

My cry walk included getting completely lost and fearing I might fall into a sinkhole and no one would ever find me.

It also included judging a handful of human beings, (at their worst) who showed me they did not care!

But thankfully, also, being awe-filled by the One who, on the contrary, showed me (at His best) that He truly does!

This cry walk of mine ended up being like Psalm 23 - as a real life experience. The guidance, the provision and the rest, green pasture, quiet water, even a valley with all of its shadows and finally, the safe (and warm) dwelling that I thankfully, ended up at.

Be encouraged.

This same promise keeper can guide you to rest, if you choose to be led and He can -

open your eyes in wonder,

so you can know He is there,

- if you choose to see.

He can also lead you out of life’s slippery, swampy, dark valleys and into the warmth of safety.

May you know this, whether you’ve resorted to yelling out and swearing at the sky or weirdly finding some way to act out your prayer,

He sees. He cares. He hears you .

GOD WINKS

Just another name for "His fingerprints are all over this!"

Have you ever just needed a special little something? Even an uplift to boost your faith or give you hope that Somebody up there actually cares?

Maybe it wasn’t even anything major (or maybe it was) and suddenly, Whalah! Like a tap from a fairy godmothers wand, God shows up and blesses you big time.

In fact, it hits you like a big surging wave of love and you feel like, if you looked up, you’d see God giving you a wink like,

“Yep, that was Me, Happy Birthday" (even though it’s, not even your birthday!)

I have been in situations where moments like these just seem to happen continuously and it has felt like God's fingerprints have just been all over the place.

Someone said "Oh, they are likely just coincidences."

Well, why is it that when I pray, coincidences happen and when I don't, they don't?

My friend Mel calls them GOD WINKS!

And so I invited my friend Mel onto the April May Gems Radio Show / Podcast - Episode 53. (Gosh, that’s more shows than an entire deck of cards!) We recorded the show in the beautiful Moore River, where the river meets the sea, off the coast of WA, Australia and this episode reminds me a bit of a deck of cards, especially the ol’ one eye jack because we called it “GOD WINKS.”

Join me and my very flamboyant, faith filled, tenacious and very stylish (leopard print loving) God chaser friend, who never gives up hope, even when all the odds are stacked against her, as we play a game of - not cards, but a tennis battin’ style, back n forth game of God Winks, where we take it in turns at sharing short n sweet stories of times when God has given us a bit (or a lot) of a wink.

- The weird desire to see a cow - running, fulfilled. (I mean, have you ever seen a cow run before?)

- Feeling crowned, prepped for victory and ready for freedom.

The Art of Arrow Bouncing.

We're talking Hurt and Offence. What's the difference and What do we do?

I know from experience that words can bring hope. I also know, from experience that they can bring pain. Words can be like arrows aimed at our heart. They can penetrate and embed themselves and really, really hurt.

Have you ever heard of the art of "Arrow Bouncing?"

Also, do you think there is a difference between a hurt and an offence? Or do you think being hurt and being offended are both just a feeling. And, What’s the answer? What do we do if we’re feeling hurt, particularly by someone’s words or if we’ve hurt someone else with our words? What do we do if we’re offended or someone else has taken offence because of something we’ve said? More importantly what should we do, for the good of all involved, including ourselves!

Hurt and offence, I believe are definitely two very different things.

Hurts, I liken to arrows. They get thrown. They land. I feel the sting. Right in my heart and, it hurts. It’s a very real feeling that I feel. Offence though, is my choice - to leave that arrow in there.

I have learned the hard way that to leave an arrow in there, to leave that hurt to fester in my heart and choose to be offended is not a good thing because offence only ever led me to a whole lot more of ugliness. Like anger, even rage, unforgiveness, bitterness, resentment or it can even drive me to harmful substances.

None of that is pretty.

Arrows can come in many forms, not just words by the way. They can also be actions or even inactions, like
broken promises or being excluded or being bullied. Some of these arrows can be intentionally aimed right at you, like in the form of some kind of abuse or they can be completely unintentional like a trauma from a tragedy, like the unexpected death of close loved one or destruction of a relationship or even a disappointment. Something that just didn’t go the way you’d hoped or planned.

Hurts … happen.

If you live on this planet (especially with other people) being hurt is inevitable. Whatever the arrow though, they are bounce-able.

Speaking of arrows being bounce-able, have you ever seen those bouncy blow up clowns that have a section of sand in their base? I remember them from the 80s. You basically punch them over and over and as hard as you can and even if the top of the clown hits the floor it still just bounces right back up again. #mylife. Yep.

I think life is a bit like one of those blow up bouncy clowns.

The punches are like the arrows - hurts that hit hard. The only reason that clown is able to keep on getting up though, punch after punch, blow after blow is because of the sand in the base of that clown. Moral of this story? You gotta have a good foundation!

So, what is your foundation? The foundation that supports your good ol’ 'get back up’ life attitude. What is the ultimate strength that’s gonna get you back up on your feet, stronger than ever, despite life’s blows and hard knocks?

What would happen if one really sharp arrow of hurt comes flying towards one of those blow up bouncy clowns and it lands. It doesn’t bounce. Instead, it pierces and penetrates, deep into the heart of that blow up clown. What would happen? Well, if you throw an arrow at a blow up clown, it deflates. Right?

Gosh. How many times in the past, I have felt so deflated because of words that have hit me hard and wounded me deep.

Can you relate?

Starting Life All Over Again. The answer to "Nico's" deep question.

“Can We Enter a Second Time into our Mothers Womb to be Re-Born?”

(Good one Nico!)

Have you ever felt like you just wish you could go back, like in time and be re born?

Start life over?

A ‘take two’ / try again? Make it all different. Better! Well, I have. As in, I have felt like that.

So, I did. I started over.

It was an actual event that happened and it was so significant I recorded the date and called it ...

my second birth-day!

It was quite a wee while after my rebellious teen-aged years when on any given Friday night I could be seen climbing into nightclub windows and so that I wouldn’t get caught sneaking in without paying, I’d draw a fake entry stamp on my wrist with a ‘nico pen.’ That’s what we called them back in the 80s. They were kind of like a sharpie I guess and they were black. A black Nico.

Such was the colour of the sky when a guy, I like to call Nico, came along one night, ‘under the cover of night time,’ thousands of years ago, to ask the hip rabbi of the day a few important questions and one of his questions was,

“Can we enter a second time into our mothers womb to be born, like all over again?” (Good one Nico!)

Weird question.

But the answer, surprisingly, if you have ears to hear, is not so weird.

Jesus Sees. In honour of My Mum. Jan 1950 - Apr 2025.

Jesus Sees. Two little words. Oh so easily just written off. Unless, you know...

A few weeks ago I wrote two little words up on a huge whiteboard that was positioned on a wall, in a palliative care ward. Right in the middle of a bunch of quotes and nice sayings I wrote, just two small words.

“Jesus sees.”

The next day someone had rubbed those words out, from on that whiteboard. Only those two words. So, I wrote them up there again, and I continued to, every day that I walked onto that ward, until it stopped being rubbed out / written off.

Jesus sees.

How easy it is, for us to just simply ‘write off’ those words, unless you absolutely know them to be your personal truth.

Be inspired this 'May (Mothers Day Special) Episode' to open your spiritual eyes to the truth of what Jesus can show you!

SCARS - "They don't define who you are..." Jules Riding. The Interview.

A few nights ago I had a dream. In the dream, Jules Riding was sitting opposite me, in the studio...

“The story of your scar - does not define who you are - a ‘healed’ wound tells your story…” Jules Riding.

A few nights ago I had a dream.

In the dream, a man by the name of Jules Riding (of whom I knew nothing about) was sitting across from me in the Fresh Fm Studios in Nelson. I woke up and emailed this Jules person and two days later, I was interviewing him, just hours before he shot off to begin his New Zealand Tour!

So, who is Jules Riding?

Well, I had no idea! Look, I had seen him sing some songs at a Music Festival once but that was about it.

I did not know that he was a bit of NZ household name!

Jules Riding is an award winning singer songwriter. He has traveled over 30 countries for more than 20 years with his music, including a 12 month world tour with his wife and children, across 8 countries! He has released a dozen albums including a couple especially for children .

Two of his albums have WON “Gospel Album of the Year” at the New Zealand Music Awards!

Many of his songs have appeared in various songbooks and some of his songs have also been selected for programs taught to kids in the USA. He has even had a song that was chosen as a finalist in New Zealand's most prestigious secular songwriting award - APRA Silver Scroll Award!

Jules Riding was also one of 22 songwriters from 18 nations who had a song selected for a concert in ROME that was to promote world peace. Wow!

Plus, if all that wasn’t enough, for a starstruck little community radio host like myself, he has also authored a few books, including:-

- 2 volumes of poetry,

- a 40 day devotional study program and

- a self help testimonial/study book called "Brokenheart."

The book, Brokenheart, is all about how one man made it through burnout, overcame depression without the use of pills, and came to terms with a dysfunctional background marked with alienation and abuse.

The book was written in the hope that it would "speak to those who have experienced pain, grief or despair of any kind (most of us), and in particular those who have grappled with dysfunction in their past or struggled with depression, anger and grief."

Here is something else I did not know about Jules Riding...

I did not know the depth of his compassion for those in need of hope, particularly those who are suffering with depression or wandering through life as though in a wilderness. In his new album, titled SCARS, on the track that bears the same name, Jules sings:

"The story of your scar

Does not define who you are..."

He continues with "a healed wound tells your story, healed for, healed for God’s glory..." and so I ask Jules Riding in this episode if there is a message (of hope perhaps?) that he would personally like to convey through this new album, SCARS. I also ask him, "What is your driving force?"

Of course I play a couple of songs too on this episode. I chose two from his CATACLYSM album.

HOPE

"I hope it all works out." "I hope I’m gonna be okay." "I hope things get better…" Hmmm... HOPE. Pie in the sky? or Person?

"I hope it all works out." "I hope I’m gonna be okay." "I hope things get better…"

Sheesh, that all sounds like a ‘pie in the sky kinda hope’ to me!

The truth is that sometimes things don’t work out, no matter how much we ‘hope’ for them to and sometimes things really don’t feel okay and ‘we’ don’t feel okay and sometimes things just don’t appear to get any better and even if they do, it can sometimes take a really long time and no matter how much hope we can conjure up during that long journey it cannot quicken the process.

What can just hoping do?

Well, I’ll tell you what hoping did for me.

A big fat nothing that’s what!

Because hope in and of itself, in my experience is pointless, just like a feeling and feelings in my hormonal body and mind, fluctuate and change, while changing nothing!

Hope to me was just a feeling. Until one day, I found the real hope. Hope that is solid, that I believe we can each choose to put our trust in, so that even if things are not okay and even if things don’t turn out like we plan or dream or wish they would and even if situations are taking ages and ages to ‘get better’ - even if they don’t get better, this hope, is like a concrete anchor that can help us feel so secure.

It’s big and it’s capable and it’s super strong. Strong enough to hold us firm and calm us, giving us peace and keeping us still and steady and grounded, especially in the midst of turmoil or even, tragedy.

This hope, that I liken to an anchor has the capacity to be embedded super deep (if we let it) and it can enable us to withstand the storms AND the waves – no matter how big they are.

This hope, He's a person!

The Love Letter

An old brown envelope. Wrapped in love. It's addressed to you. What do you do?

What do you do?

Open it of course!

Or in this case, I'll do the honour's. I'll just let it be read out loud to you so you can hear the words and hopefully, let them soak in, to your heart - so that you can be blessed to know, just how loved you are.

What about love after hurt?

What if there is so much hurt in your past that your past can be symbolised as a monumental mountain that you know you could never, ever conquer, climb or 'get over' on your own.

What if there was someone who is willing to 'give you a hand?'

Someone who is standing, just waiting at the bottom of that mountain, and all you have to do is give Him, your hand.

Would you? I did.

Been hurt? Be loved!

Not just by any old love. There's a different kind of love! It's a love that is not only possible, it's attainable and available, even after hurt, along with that hand.

Choosing Joy Despite Circumstances - World Happiness Day

Seriously?

Who on earth came up with the idea of a Worldwide International Day of Happiness?

Well, I can tell you it was someone who was born into a circumstance that most of us would not wish for!

The idea of this International Happiness Day was suggested however, to ‘increase’ happiness. - Go figure!

Anyhow, the United Nations accepted the proposal and so now, it’s a thing!

Celebrating happiness, all over the globe, every March.

And its aim? Well, to make people around the world realise the importance of happiness “within their [own] lives,” of course!

And that’s what I want to talk about today.

Happiness, within life, whatever that life looks like. Your life, whatever it may bring.

So, what if your life is indeed one big ball of sad?

Happiness, in all honesty may seem unreachable, or to some, even unthinkable.
I mean, is finding the happy amidst dreadful circumstances even achievable?

What is it? What does it look like? How do we make it last? How can we capture it so we can endure through the tough times, with it?

Perhaps there is something deeper than just ‘temporary happy’ or ‘faking’ the happy.

An inner joy, that is inexpressible. Indescribable. Unspeakable.

A continual joy that brings real strength for times of weakness, or even grief and a peace that surpasses all understanding, amidst a sad circumstantial season or despite a dire situation.

I found it. You can too.

as I ponder the bricks that we build, that create THE WALL’s in our life, likely to protect our own hearts but that ultimately shut the very one that can heal it, out.

Hmmm... Do you have the view of life that if you are a goody-goody and 'eat all your meat' (so to speak) that you will get rewarded with some ‘pudding’ one day?

As in, surely you will get to sit on that fluffy white cloud and play a harp in Heaven (or something like that) perhaps?

Oh, but if you are naughty, then some far away fantasy, lightning-bolt striking God might just one day strike you down instead?

Let me encourage you in the midst of some Pink Floyd classics, on this episode of the April May Gems Show this week, to not be like a

“LOST SOUL, SWIMMING IN A FISH BOWL!”

But to know the truth.

WORLD RADIO DAY at Hokitika's Annual Living Waters Music Festival

Coming to you on location in HOKITIKA on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand, for their Annual Living Waters Music Festival, I share a few 'fun facts' about radio on yet another annual celebration – The International Day of Radio aka "World Radio Day!"

For example …

Have you ever wondered what a Brooklyn navy yard’s wireless operator (who was copying morse code one day) heard through his headphones, when the very first voice recording was transmitted over the airwaves in 1907 - from over 10kms away?!

Well, was it really an Angel???

I admit this show is a little noisy with the musos playing in the background but it was such a great day out for families and people of all ages, with food trucks, hay bales for seats and lots of dancing, bands and stand-alone singers, as well as lots of story-teller's and one radio host (lol) bringing you a little hope amidst all the buzz.

I also share my own " landing a radio host gig " story.

Just how did I end up on the radio?

Well, I think it really all started with Jellybeans!

I also share the vision of my local community radio station, FreshFM.

A station by the people, for the people, and about the people. Powered by the passion of people, all of us being locals living and breathing the same (but different) experiences, as you!

Interesting People, Fascinating Stories: Project of Love.

Do you ever feel like you’re living under a cloud of gloom? Like, there's a thick, heavy blackness just looming over you?

Well, don’t lose hope.

There are some wonderful wise words that were written long ago that can be like a life-line to you, if you let them.

They were a life-line for Xander Stok, a Dutch man who ‘once upon a time’ (and up until just a few years ago) was living it up as a very famous musician in a devilish, rock and roll, dream life as front man for the band “The New Shining” (literally named after that scary Stephen King book!)

However, behind the face of fame he also lived a very real nightmare, for twenty long years, suffering with a very deep depression, which he says was like

" living in a void, where things like joy, laughter, happiness and life itself became abstract concepts ."

All he felt was an emptiness... “like a cloud of gloom and a shadow of death...”

Well, those ancient, wise words I mentioned earlier, say this:-

“He will remove the cloud of doom, the shadow of death...” (Isaiah 25:7)

Maybe you're feeling like you’re living under a similar heavy weight that you just can’t seem to ‘lift off’ of yourself, by yourself because it’s too dark. It's too heavy.

Maybe you’re in a ‘fed up with life' kind of state, like Xander was.

Maybe you struggle with addictions and you, like Xander, feel like you're just " so far gone ..."

2025 It's Great to be Alive - or is it?

Are you curbed to the idea that this life, in 2025 is NOT a great time to be alive? Well, I think it depends on what you’re looking at.

Do you remember the kaleidoscope - that toy with the magical displays of different colours that you could spin around and new patterns would emerge and it was just all so mysteriously wonderful? As a little child we could be so mesmerised by these magical moments of wonder.

I feel like a little child sometimes...

in a world that’s full of big, mean people, with little or no control over a lot of what’s going on around me and soon enough I can feel like things are looking pretty dark

but then I remember

that I can choose to look at all of the colourful things instead, all of the sweet patterns, the good things that other people are doing, creating or difference-making in the world, to make life, better.

It's kind of like looking through a kaleidoscope, which is really just a cardboard tube that’s full of lots of shiny bits of plastic and little mirrors but it's truly beautiful because of all the light that's bouncing off of it all.

I can choose to look and see where or who the light is bouncing off of!

Honestly, if you start looking, you'll soon begin to notice, they’re everywhere.

Now, don't get me wrong. I don't want to be like an ostrich with my head in the sand. I mean, let's be real for a minute.

There are sooo many reasons to believe that it's NOT a nice time to be alive and many of those reasons I think, can be traced back to the wrong doings, wrong thinking's and wrong decision makings of evil minded, greedy, envious, pride filled, people, many of whom are in some kind of position of power over regular, everyday people.

I discuss so many of those reasons in this weeks episode of the April May Gems Show that I 'almost' could curb myself into the idea that this life in 2025 really is NOT a great time to be alive (and like me, I bet you could even add things to that list, personal things perhaps?)

But, no. I want to put it to you that our outlook on a new year, or even on life in general, really does depend on what we’re looking at.

Where is your perspective at?

Now, I don’t mean we should check out of reality. What I do mean is we ought to be careful to not get bogged down with negative news and instead, look for the good stuff!

Good things are happening all around us if we just have eyes to search and see and ears to listen.

My Top Ten Tips, Tricks & Traditions for a Meaningful Christmas

Long-gone are the days when “Get your stocking out” meant to pull out the biggest sock you could find, from inside your undies drawer, ready to wake up on Christmas morning with an orange stuffed in the toe part, plus a red netted bag of nuts that you couldn’t really eat unless you had a nutcracker (or muscles that no six-year-old had!)

However, there were a few lollies in there and some coins and one special light up or moving toy of some description so it was all good.

Gone also, are the days when I was grinchy, grumpy, Mumma bear with Christmas tree OCD!

Oh, how things have changed. Times have changed. But some things are timeless and worthy of staying around for Christmas.

What is Christmas?

I have heard people say, "Oh, its about family..." "Look, its all about the giving..." "Ha, it's just all about the kids really..." and "Well, its about being happy, you know...joy, joy, joy and all that..." Well, what if I don't have kids or I'm far away from any family or I'm poor, with nothing to give or I have really good reasons to just, actually, feel sad? What is Christmas then?

I can honestly say that I have been one to utter each of these statements in answer to the question, 'What is Christmas?' Because at different times, during different Christmas seasons, they have each been true.

Christmas's in years gone by truly have been, 'about family.'

Having been married to a man with nine siblings, all with partners and more than a few of those couples producing handfuls of children - ie cousins for my kids (which was quickly adding up into the thirties when you included my side of the family as well) certainly meant for many a monumental gathering on Christmas day! Yes, Christmas was all about family.

Christmas's over many years was also 'about giving.'

I was born with a great big heart of gratitude and generosity. Combine that with a love language of 'gift giving,' a desire to support an untold amount of charities and also people I know, and a business doing relatively okay and you'll get a whole lot of giving going on, particularly at Christmas time! So, yep, it certainly was all about the giving.

Christmas's for seemingly endless years in a row was also, of course, all 'about the kids.'

Six people in our home is more than half a soccer team you know. It's fair to say two of those were adults but Christmas time with a bunch of children really makes you feel like one too. Christmas morning in our home was always vibrant, energetic, playful, messy and fun. It also included someone having to eat half a cookie, drink half a glass of milk and chomp on a carrot outside the front door around midnight (for a Rudolf reality effect not because we like binge eating, particularly on carrots at midnight!) It really was all about the kids though right? Well, yes.

Oh the Christmas Joy! It's all 'about the joy.'

In 1996 I prayed a prayer and found Jesus. Actually He found me. I was the one who was lost! Prior to my prayer, I had a supernatural encounter in my bedroom and three days later, I started attending a vibrant church. It was February. I found true and real joy that I had never known before. By the time Christmas came around, I knew what all the Carols were really about and even when I heard them playing over the loudspeakers in the supermarket, I would cry - tears of joy. It was real. It still is. Can I honestly say Christmas is about...Joy? Yes. But...

But what if there's...

NO JOY.

I've had Christmas seasons whereby I've had good reasons to appear significantly sad, due to circumstances. One year an annual 'hot pink tinsel on the tree tradition' was created, as I grieved the missing child in my family, who had died less than 8 months prior to Christmas Day. Joy, as in 'happiness,' was not something I appeared to have all over my face that year.

The truth is, some people are facing some very real sad situations at Christmas time.

NO PRESENTS TO GIVE.

During Christmas times past, I have been so poor and so needy that there truly was nothing I could give. I relied heavily on charities to feed my growing family including the Christmas snacks at Christmas time and the provision of a toy for my child, wrapped up by a stranger.

The truth is, some people have so little to give and the expectations are just way too big at Christmas time.

NO FAMILY.

I am indeed officially old now I think. Well, I am a Nanny if that counts and although I love my life here in NZ and believe I have been called here to serve, by administering hope to a community that God must have felt needed it, I live over 5000 kilometres away from my adult children and my grandbaby / grandbabies (I say that by faith.) My siblings, my parents, my nieces and nephews, my family, are all very far away.

The truth is, some people are feeling very alone and separated from family at Christmas time.

NO KIDS.

My kids are no longer kids. They are all grown ups. They each have their own lives, own addresses, own families and own Christmas's now. I try and see them all late in the year as a pre-Christmas get-together but look, it's not really the same okay. Those midnight cookie and carrot crunching nights are definitely over.

The truth is, some people are missing the old days of Christmas with their little ones. Others are desperate for children. Still others are missing their own, for one reason or another.

So, What is Christmas? Particularly if youre childless, joyless, penniless and/or have no family around?

Well, it's still about a family. It's still about giving. It's still about joy and it's still about children, (especially one in particular) for all of us.

But for those of us who are experiencing any of the above, it is SO MUCH MORE including - Peace and Hope.

Peace is a promise that was given to every human being on Earth one night long ago and it's available to each one of us still, no matter who we are and no matter what are circumstances. It was promised to all at a time when a historical star shone so bright in the sky that it caused wise men to travel towards it. It was also a time when a multitude of Angels were seen singing to a bunch of shepherds in that same night sky. They announced this promise of peace that I can vouch is not only attainable but can be felt, even in the midst of chaos and even if that chaos is in the midst of a Christmas season. (Luke 2:13-18).

Hope was also given on that night. Hope that, despite all that this life does to bring us down, despite all the blows that life punches us with and despite all the suffering we go through, our Creator, God, came down, to be 'with us.' He is able to walk 'with us' comforting us, strengthening us and granting us wisdom and hope through it all. Through our sadness, through our loneliness, through our longings and through our times of our lack. "Emmanuel", one of the titles given to the baby born that night means, "God with us." (Matthew 1:23) Jesus is His name. He was 'given to us' as a gift, that if we choose to receive, will be with us always and will never leave us.

This is the real reason why Christmas is about giving.

It's been noted that Jesus is a friend that sticks closer to a brother and the only one that can make us right with our Father. If we receive Him as the gift that God has freely given to us, we can become God's very own children. (John 1:12,13) This is family.
This is the real reason why Christmas is about family.

He can fill us with unspeakable Joy that is different to circumstantial happiness, which comes and goes. The joy that Jesus gives is unlimited. It's not based on our current situation and it's eternal. It can be felt even through tough times. This joy can be our strength when we feel weak, sad, depressed or overcome with grief. (Nehemiah 8:10) I absolutely know this to be true.

This is the real reason why Christmas is about Joy.

What would you do to create the first Christmas? Would you become an ant?

If you had an ant farm and you dearly loved your precious little ants but there was a fire and all of your little ants were headed for the flames. What would you do? You could yell at them to turn around but would they hear you? You could try and move them all with your big hairy hands but would that be crossing the line of allowing each one of them the choice to walk according to their own free will? What if you could become an ant, just for a little piece of time? Would you? Would you go as far as to risk your own life and stand in the fire so they wouldn't get burnt? Would you go as far as to the point of death, for your beloved ants? How much more does God love us.

Long before time began, Jesus existed. He left his Heavenly Kingdom to come to Earth because it was the only way to show us The Way (John 14:6). Including the only way back home to our loving creator. He didn't come as a powerful dictator. He came as one of us. He came in a way that we could relate to Him, so we could hear. He came as a human. He came as a baby in a manger. He came as a child. The first Christ-mas.

This is why Christmas is ... about a child.

For unto 'us' a child is born...

If you have no family around you at Christmas time, no gifts or money to buy any, no kids in your circle and joy is just, absent, you can still have a wonderful Christmas because you can have within you, the greatest gift of all, not just at Christmas time but through all time, the greatest of family, the greatest of any child ever born and the greatest joy that even money can't buy - just choose to receive Jesus into your heart this Christmas. A simple prayer will do.

Yep, I took a trip over to the Land of Oz. Namely, the Southern Coast of Western Australia (where one can swim with a dolphin) and the Northern Coast of Far North Queensland (where a crocodile can decide to suntan on the shore of the beach!) Anyway, I met up with three very inspiring people in my travels, who each agreed to come on the radio and share their story. I hope they inspire you.

Episode 36 - Big Boy's Don't Cry (or do they?) My Banana Bender (Queenslander) brother from another mother talks "Men and Tears..."

First up, on my Australian trip of the April May Gems Radio Show / Podcast, from the sunny location of Townsville QLD, I got to have a good old Aussie chin-wag with a true blue Australian male about men and tears, on this Episode I titled, “Big Boys Don’t Cry." - (Episode 36 )

I guess I really wanted to ask the questions – Do big boys cry? Do we as a society, let them? I mean, is it really allowed or is it taboo, even frowned upon? Do we suddenly consider, “Oh my goodness my big strong man is actually a weakling,” if he admits he “ got a bit of dust in his eye ” while watching the notebook?! (That's a true story by the way!)

On this Podcast episode, I talk about one great man who cried, even in public. Now, I don’t mean great as in a ‘big strong man’ but a man who was all powerful, highly esteemed and called a King, the King of all Kings actually. A man with unlimited authority, that even broke the laws of the natural world and yet was also called ‘a man of sorrows.’ I want to reassure you in this episode that whatever gender you are, your tears matter. Actually, each one is treasured and ‘bottled’ so you don’t have to ‘bottle’ them yourself.

I also played a couple of beautiful (tear jerking) songs too. One in particular by Elliot Park called Bottle of Tears that I highly recommend sharing with anyone who really does need some comfort because they cry a lot. It's a great song to let them know that their tears truly matter and are precious to God.

I'm truly thankful to my special guest, a banana-bender ‘brother from another mother,’ for sharing his thoughts / his story.

Episode 37. From the Wide Road of Destruction, to Walking by Faith.

A boy named Troy shares his story...

While still in the midst of the tall palm trees on the sunny location of Townsville QLD (and sadly, not swimming due to the stingers and the croc they caught on the shore the week before) I chat to a boy named Troy In Episode 37 who proposes some interesting questions.

"Was Michael Jackson even real? How do you know? Were there witnesses?" in an attempt to get people who are wondering if 'God exists' or 'if Jesus is real' to not just write this pondering off but to do some research, academically as well as spiritually.

Troy is a sandgroper (a West Aussie) who came from a crazy, dysfunctional, abusive childhood and by age 14 had attended 13 schools, felt neglected, rejected, friendless and angry and was diagnosed with a neurological condition which led him on to a life of drugs and crime. By age 16 he was jailed for serious, violent crimes. Troy lived on the streets and was a drug addict for 11 years, burying four of his best mates by age 30.

Troy says “I just wanted to die.”

Troy says he decided to go to a church “to look for hot chicks” but God had a different plan for him. He ended up jamming with Christian musos as a drummer. Troy’s ‘walking by faith’ journey, has been long and deep and he speaks openly on this episode of the depths of understanding, deep revelations, personal supernatural encounters and experiences and a relevance from God that he says “changed him as a person,” including the simple art of gratitude that changed his perception of his circumstances, his behaviour and his thoughts.

Episode 38. Everyone needs a Mentor. What About One who Witnessed a Miracle?

Meet my mentor - Sherlie, from a town way down, in the deep south-west of Australia (though ‘home’ is always New Zealand!)

In this Radio Show / Podcast Episode, Sherlie shares that once upon a time, she had “no goals, no thought of God, ample money, a couple of properties, was indulging in all sorts of adventures, parties and world travel and ticked all the ‘happy, fun’ boxes but, she shares, there was a void, an empty feeling inside of her that even new age meetings, that were full of people of all ages, searching for that missing piece, couldn’t help.

Could a friend with a book about Creation really lead her to a simple A, B, C of enlightenment? Sounds easy right?

Well, her deep longing met with her stubbornness and Sherlie says she went through choking and screaming before she surrendered to the love and acceptance that was on offer for her. Her very powerful spiritual encounter came with “a warm bright light and…peace!”

It’s a remarkable, encouraging and powerful testimony. You can listen to it here on Episode 38.

Sherlie also shares of the incredible story that followed, of her Dad, in his 70’s, given 3 months to live due to emphysema, caused by decades of smoking. He experienced a true miracle in his trackies and slippers and even in his grumpy state, ‘with his feet like cement’ his surrender to Jesus came with the gift of freedom from medication, freedom from the nicotine addiction and 7 more years of life - and at the end of it all, ultimate peace.

Sherlie has been a great mentor to me and a pleasure to interview. My favourite quote of hers in this episode is this:

“God wants His children back!”

Feel Good Movies to Inspire Us

New Podcast Episode reviewing a few fave flicks so you can grab a pen and paper and get your popcorn popping!

There's nothing quite like sitting down with your family or friends, or even all by yourself, curling up on your couch with a bowl full of popcorn and some Maltesers and really enjoying a feel good movie that warms your heart.

No full-on swearing or awkward sex scenes, just wholesome inspiration and maybe even a dose of hope.

Well, I wanted to share my personal favourite reviews of a handful (or two) of these kinds of movies.

So I did - in a podcast!

You can have a listen to the April May Gems Show - Episode 35 - titled "Feel Good Movies to Inspire Us" here.

I start off with a few of good war films (is that even a thing - yes, yes it is) as well as some biographical true stories, some romance flicks, a movie for the intellectual type and one that has been a little conversationally controversial!

I’ve even thrown in a hip and groovy film about the 70s as well as a fun Christmas musical starring the legendary rap artist Lecrae and Joel Smallbone from 4K&C that hit the big screens just last year.

You might want to grab that pen and paper during this episode or open up your notes app as some of these beauties will be worth jotting down.

War movies can be incredible.

(I promise!)

The war movies I review, truly are favourites of mine and they include:-

One remarkable true story about a guy who joins the army but even though he is a soldier, he refuses to handle weapons or engage in war.

He's a combat medic and instead of killing people, he saves them. A lot of them!

It stars the “Amazing Spiderman” actor, Andrew Garfield and it’s directed by the equally amazing, Mel Gibson.

It’s a great inspirational movie about standing up for what you believe in, even if youre the only one.

I also include a war movie directed by Angelina Jolie about a somewhat famous person, who is also a survivor of a plane crash as well as 47 days in a raft at sea, getting caught by the Japanese and becoming a prisoner of war.

He then endures continual sadistic abuse, from a prison camp guard who is bent on breaking him. But doesn’t!

If ever you’ve found it hard to forgive your enemies, it really is a great inspiring movie to watch.

(by the way, I also include the sequel which deals with this man's struggles of his traumatic memories and the love that helps him deal with it all.)

I finish off the war theme with a more kid-friendly, beautiful Stephen Spielberg directed movie that at the heart of the story (which is based on a children’s book) is about the touching bond between a young guy called Albert and his beloved and very brave horse called Joey.

It’s a story of their persevering, loyal friendship, despite all odds.

I also throw in another horse flick for kids of all ages that's uplifting, compassionate and spirited.

A beautiful animated, feel good film of the friendship between a brave, wild stallion and a young Lakota Indian boy named Little Creek.

It features a soundtrack album by Bryan Adams and stars Matt Damon.

Movies starring overcomers make us want to overcome too, right? Right!

Overcoming, despite all odds is my next theme of "Feel Good Movies to Inspire Us."

I share one that's based on the true story of a 14 year old adopted boy, who slips through an icy lake, remains under water for more than 15 minutes before getting rescued - thanks to an interesting voice from above (?) No pulse, no breath, and obviously no hope of recovery, he has a praying Mumma!

It’s an awesome true story of a medical miracle and as such, it makes for a great movie to watch and be inspired by.

Another couple of true stories about overcoming follow.

One is about a young 13yo surfer girl who experiences the horror of a tiger shark biting off her entire arm, right up to her shoulder. The story is not just about overcoming challenges and disappointments but its about endurance and determination and motivation and also about finding your passion again. Starring Helen Hunt and Dennis Quaid, a great feel good flick for all ages.

The other is about a young girl who gets really sick and suddenly needs immediate surgery or she’ll die.

Diagnosed with a chronic illness - a disorder with a big name, associated with her nervous system seems to give way for a weird miracle to take place as she falls almost 10 metres down - into the inside of a tree, receiving no serious injury, no broken bones, no paralysis but get this – she’s completely cured of her illness. The young girl shares how she left her body during the fall and had an experience with God, who told her that her illness would be cured upon her return to earth. Jennifer Garner and Queen Latifah star in this film.

If you doubt God is real or don’t believe in miracles. This true story movie is guaranteed to stir your faith, for sure.

I also throw in another true story 'Miracle Movie' about a 3 year old boy who underwent emergency surgery and in this movie, he too describes how he left his body, while in his hospital bed and had an incredible encounter.

Next on my 'overcomer movies' list is a heartwarming and uplifting movie I recommend for teens.

In a nutshell, there’s a small town with its main factory closing down and so, families are leaving, and the local high school basketball coach is re-assigned to teach cross country where no one shows up, except for one troubled teen.

Basically, it’s about a least likely coach, helping a least likely runner, attempt the impossible. It’s also about her meth addict dad that abandoned her as a baby, and how it took him to go blind in order to see. It's about a grandmother that lies to her and a coach who tells her to ‘believe in herself’ when her life has shouted at her - that she shouldn’t.

It’s super inspiring and I can attest it's great to watch with your teenagers.

Romance Films - they're not just chick flicks, I can attest they make for a great date-a-mate night (especially appealing to the guy who can admit that he "has a bit of dust in his eye" while watching The Notebook - true story of mine!)

I know, I know, how can I not chuck in some romance flicks?

Pssst, if you like Nicholas Sparks, you will know the joy of watching love story movies like The Notebook, The Longest Ride, The Lucky One, Message in a Bottle (Oh, Kevin Costner, be still my beating heart. I could go on...)

Well, I introduce you, to what I like to call the female version of Nicholas Sparks and one of her books (now a movie) is all about the absolute unwavering love of a man, for his continual run-away wife who is actually a prostitute and has been, for a really long time and, look, she just keeps on going back to this old way of life, because she feels so unworthy of her husband’s unconditional and enduring love.

I recommend this beautiful love story flick if you need to know what it is, to be truly adored, with an unwavering, unconditional love.

Gosh, we can often feel so unworthy of such a love, that we shy away. Even run away. Sometimes, over and over again but there is a some One, who will just continue to love us still, no matter what – or how many times we reject him.

This movie is worthy to be put on the 'must watch' list. A beautiful gold rush, western romance love story that will speak to your heart, if you let it.

Two more chic flicks / date night movies that are worthy of review when it comes to Feel Good Movies to Inspire Us are a couple of biographical true stories about singer songwriters.

One being about the amazing Jeremy Camp, his deep love and devastating loss of his young wife to cancer and his journey of hope and success and also faith, to still believe in Gods faithfulness, despite such a heart-wrenching tragedy. (You’ll need the tissues for this one.)

The second is also a ‘hope after tragedy’ success story strring Dennis Quaid, about the singer songwriter Bart Millard who grew up in a very abusive home.

His mum walked out while Bart was at a camp and he was left with his physically and emotionally abusive dad but when his dad becomes terminally sick, he finds redemption and faith, which leads him to a very real, sorrowful repentance, for his past actions and a rediscovery of love for his son.

This inspires Bart, as an adult and lead singer for the band, Mercy Me to write a hit song. (It has 19 million hits on its youtube video!)

It’s a really great movie that gave me such hope to believe, that none of us are ‘soooo far from God’ that He can’t find us, hear us, touch us or change us.

“Gods ear is not so dull that it cannot hear and his arm is not so short that it cannot save.” (Isaiah 59:1)

Controversy and Questions inspiring us to ask, seek and find...

Finally, I share what is quite possibly my favourite movie of this decade (which gained some crazy controversy in epic proportions) plus an intellectual favourite just for fun.

The first stars Sam Worthington, our favourite blue man from Avatar, who plays a dad, whose youngest daughter is abducted and murdered and in the midst of his grief he receives a mysterious invitation to 'meet with God!' Well, God rocks up as a rather large “ I’m just here bakin' in the kitchen " negro woman, Jesus joins the party too, y'know, walking on water and being a carpenter and stuff and the Holy Spirit is a mysterious, Asian gardening lady (?)

Anyway, this ‘very angry at God’ grieving dad asks some serious questions like,

“ If youre so loving God, why is my daughter dead ? ”

If you’ve suffered hard things like grief, or wrestled with hard questions and would love to meet with God and yell them all out, well this a great movie for you. I've watched this movie at least 10 times – it never gets old.

Perhaps you are the questioning type but youre not really into questioning God, as such and wouldn’t particularly want to chat to the water-walker (Jesus) because maybe you’re not even really sure that they even exist or ever, even did exist. Well, you might really like the next movie review.

It's all about an atheist news reporter who in the 70’s, married with a couple of kids is out at dinner one night and his daughter almost dies from choking.

Long story short, his wife decides to go to church where the lady who saved their daughters life goes and well, he gets full-on stroppy about it.

Worried that she’s joined some weird cult he starts a journey, hell bent on proving to his wife that Jesus is a load of - well, you know.

This well meaning husband/dad ends up using his journalistic gift to question all sorts of interesting people and it leads him to an amazing place of insight, not just in his brain but his heart. This movie is full of very interesting historical and medical facts for your brain as well as feel good stuff for your heart.

I highly recommend it.

Another ‘true-story based film’ from the 70s that I review, is one that hit the big screen just last year, about the unfolding of the biggest counter culture movement ever in Americas history. Its an epic film, hip and groovy, cool and inspiring and I give this a high recommendation too.

Last but not least I review the most recent big screen true story that I believe will totally move you, uplift you, inspire you and give you hope .

It's all about the life of the family known as the Smallbones. A mum, a dad, washed up and hopeless, jobless and friendless, strangers in a strange place, with a pile of kids and pregnant, face the impossible and absolutely incredible things happen in and for this family.

The famous singer Rebecca St James emerges from this family, as does her very famous brothers’ the duo band FOR KING AND COUNTRY. This film is an absolute gem and guaranteed to put a smile on your face. The real Joel Smallbone from 4K&C actually plays his own dad in this movie.

Christmas ... and that's a rap!

Speaking of Joel, He also plays mean old King Herod in a movie especially for Christmas.

It stars Lecrae too, my all time favourite rap artist, as the Angel Gabrielle.

Look, it’s a musical ok but a laugh and a half, bound to bring you joy. I saw it on the big screen last year too and honestly, it will make for a jolly good Christmas movie.

You know how they're usually chaotic, nothing really makes sense, people act super weird and everything is just really bizarre, with crazy stuff going on, and when you wake up its like, “Ahh … What the heck did I just watch”… right?

Well this was different!

In May, 2001, I dreamed an entire, fully comprehensible 'cartoon!'

In August 2024 (yes, 23 years later) I had another dream that prompted me to begin the process of bringing that 23 year old cartoon dream to life.

The journey has now begun and these cartoon characters will soon become caricature's on the pages of a beautiful story book, a keepsake pocketbook for a pre-teen to treasure - the story within, well worth remembering.

It stars a kind and loving, Master Goldsmith who gives a young girl a pure, perfect, untarnished, flawless, immaculate piece of precious gold with the hopeful request that she keep it hidden, in a secret place until one very, special day – the "Day of the Big Exchange."

It also features the girl as a teenager, showing deep regret, that she’d not taken heed to the Master Goldsmiths heartfelt instructions but instead, she’d laid her precious piece of gold out on display and this results in her gold being lost forever.

Thankfully the Master Goldsmith is kind and forgiving but pure gold is not easy to come by. However, regret can lead to redemption and restoration, healing and hope.

This is a Purity Principle story for Mums, Grandmas and favourite Auntie's to give to their pre teen, not just as a keepsake book to treasure, but as a 'conversation starter!'

As we head in to the month of October – which is “ Infant Loss Awareness month, ” what better time to share this precious story. Anna's story.

My greatest loss was that of my little girl, Anna Grace, who was stillborn. The excitement in the hearts of my other four children soon turned to confusion and inconsolable grief following the death of their baby sister. The youngest of my four, just a toddler, brought comfort to our family with his very real understanding of an undeniable truth. I took that truth and put it on paper for other little children to know.

May this beautiful story of hope, inspired by the child-like faith of Anna’s young brother and illustrated with love by her big sister bring comfort to all the little ones (and their families too) who are grieving the loss of their loved one.

You may not know, but when a baby dies, the grief felt is enormous for a parent. I know this, only too well.

For the parent who already has other small children it is confusing and often difficult to comfort them also, as they themselves struggle to find the right words.

This book will be helpful for such a time as this. It will help those children gain understanding and be comforted. It can also help other family members (who read it to them) open their heart to the One who ‘prepares a place’ in Heaven, for all who love Him.

Let a little one you know come on a journey of rhyme, be wrapped up in love and uplifted with hope as their hearts receive comfort following the loss of a loved one.

Let the big bold hand-drawn pictures coloured with heartfelt compassion and care, bring peace and trust and aid their healing as they learn to draw close, to the One who loves them the most.

I just want to say THANK YOU...

Ok, I admit the bait tactic.

Chef baked lamingtons in Motueka, New Zealand and colourful cupcakes in Perth, Western Australia may have perhaps been the mouth-watering, luring bait used to tantalise guests to come along to one of my book launches but the real catch was for all of us to have some fun!

And, I do believe we all did.

Thank you.

To all of you who endured the somewhat awkwardness of playing a pass the parcel game (yes, you are an adult now and it showed haha!)

I trust each one of you enjoyed your prize and will remember what it represented, whether it was a candy cane, a chocolate fish, fairy floss or that giant sucky lollypop.

To those who were called up because you had a winning scrabble letter, thank you for being brave and helping me spell out PASS IT ON (not "passion" as some yelled out from the crowd, lol)

My hindsight hopes.

My flaws.

I will never profess (from a stage or otherwise) to be an amazingly skilled author.

To be honest, I often read my own books and I see all the flaws, mistakes and imperfections and I have felt embarrassment, shame and sadness. That was until the day that God pointed out to me this truth:- I too am flawed. I too make mistakes and I too am far from perfect but " Hey ", (He said, in His still, small, loving voice that speaks to the depths of my heart,) " I still use you " and so I do believe He is well able to use my books too.

I implore you with all sincerity, please be sure to read with your heart and not your hypercritical head.

Be encouraged. Seasons change.
You don't have to stay in April. May has come!

April

It always reminds me …that

Some times things just don’t work out how you had hoped or dreamed or planned.

Some times it’s so devastating you wonder if you will ever hope or dream or plan, or trust, again.

Some times the disappointment can be soul crushing.

Some times the sadness can drape over you like a dark, heavy cloak that you can’t or don’t want to take off.

Some times anger (perhaps particularly at the One who is apparently “in control” and could have made things different) smoulders like a volcano, deep in the inner most parts of your being, ready to erupt at any moment.

Some times, hope to believe for anything good ever again, seems impossible, evolving instead into a make-believe idea, like wishes, that won’t ever come true.

I know.

I've been there.

Here is an excerpt from Chapter 7 "G is for Grace, Anna Grace" from my first book, " He is Faithful from A to Z."

"My name was called and I covered my intense worry with an amazing smile and friendly chit chat all the way from the waiting room, down the hall and into the consulting room. After answering a few routine questions (including “have you felt baby moving?”) with honesty and hidden anxiety, it was suggested that a portable ultra-sound be brought in and I make my way onto the bed. Immediately I tried to reassure this medical expert that it wasn’t really needed and I was sure that everything was fine and not to bother going to all that trouble, however, she insisted. It was at that point where I really began to panic and my heart began to beat really fast. I lay upon that hospital bed for a few minutes and those few minutes seemed like hours as I awaited the portable ultrasound machine to make its way to my side. I began praying fervently under my breath. Then I began sweating and shaking. Fear had already set in and I hadn’t even got as much as the gel on my tummy.

The next few minutes were undoubtedly the darkest few minutes that I have ever experienced in my entire life. To relay them in words would be the most difficult of tasks ever set before me, but I will try. As the radiographer moved the cold rolling instrument over my belly and together, we stared at the snowy, black and white image on the screen, she smiled and small talked as she went back and forth, back and forth. I on the other hand heard nothing but the sound of my own heartbeat that seemed to desperately want to jump right out of my chest. All I could see was a deathly stillness and though my face had become a still, blank stare, tears had already begun to fall. I’d had enough experience to know what a baby in the wombs heart beat sounds like and looks like during an ultrasound. Here, there was no noise and no movement. There was no heartbeat. There was only stillness, life-less stillness. The radiographer mentioned something about the silly machine and that she would go and get the doctor. She left the room and immediately I felt so incredibly alone.

So, I cried out to my God albeit softly but with the desperation of a loud, earnest plea. Surely, He was there with me. Tears still fell silently and I began to dart my focus back and forth, between the blank screen, to the ceiling (and Heavens above) praying desperate prayers, and wondering how this miracle might play out. Would the silly machine find the baby’s heartbeat waking her from her still sleep? Would I pray out loud and watch in awe as two non-believers witnessed death turn to life before their very eyes? As I waited for the return of the radiographer and the doctor I just continually asked for God to help me. I’m not even sure what I meant by that.

A few minutes later the two experts entered the room like crashing waves on a tossing sea of turmoil, the taller one of the two quickly taking a turn of the transducer probe. As it became more and more apparent that there was in fact no little heart beating in my womb, the voice of the doctor shattered any hope I had, of the playing out of any miracle in that room. “I’m so sorry” he mouthed, “but…your baby has died.” I expect they were waiting for me to deny their opinion, seek another one or request additional means of finding my baby’s heartbeat but I didn’t do any of those things. I just looked to the ceiling and began to sob. Soon my sobs became intense cries of grief as I came to accept the fact that my little girl had died..."

That day was a very, very sad day in April, that turned into a sad season.

Today I thank God, that seasons change.

Today I thank God that I never have to stay in a sad season, endlessly thinking about when things haven’t worked out like I wanted them to.

Today I thank God that He heals broken hearts, takes away pain, trades sorrow for joy and somehow takes shattered dreams and paints a different, more beautiful picture with the pieces.

Some times, things may not turn out like we hope or dream or plan,

but I know, that

all the time,

God is good

and He can be trusted if we give it all, our all, to Him.

Time and time again,

I’ve experienced this, firsthand.

April represents just one of them.

Today I thank God that I didn't have to stay in April.

April is always followed by May.

Winter time is always followed by Summer time.

Sunshine always comes out following a storm.

Joy can be found after sorrow

and Anna's book " The Baby Who Went Straight to Heaven " has birthed life and hope into children, all over the world.

I am eternally thankful.

" . .. Yet, that was then and this was now and here I was, crying on a bath mat, still feeling stripped of everything, still waiting to be resurrected.

The crashing waves in my life were one thing and they were some seriously big circumstantial waves that were crashing down on my life, truly tossing me about. But the faithlessness, the inability to fight and the realisation that I had nothing left in or of myself was another thing altogether. All of this was a lot to deal with. I cannot express enough that it really felt like I was dying inside. I knew God’s love for me and I knew He had even promised that I would rise again but with faith and hope absent, gifts within me lying dormant, regret and self-pity my new friends, I really did feel like that bird – laying there, dead as a doornail. One thing was for sure. This certainly would be a testimony to talk about. God would surely be given all the praise and glory for this resurrection as there was no way that I could possibly do this myself. I had nothing. And that is why this,

I have longed to be accepted and loved unconditionally. I have struggled with rejection. I have known the pain of a hard marriage, betrayal, divorce, abandonment and single-mothering. Words especially have cut me deep. I have been hurt and I have needed to be healed.

I have wanted to be swept off of my feet and rescued by my beloved Knight in shining armour, who will romance me and care for me, cherish me and never, ever leave me. I know there are others out there like me. They are the reason I wrote this book.

Petals in the Wasteland is a novel, a love story. A true love story.

It's about a character who is often downtrodden and depressed and is continually uplifted by her unnamed lover. Come and share in her journey of inner healing as well as many adventures of the super-natural kind. Then, like Tessa, maybe you will feel compelled, to share it too, with the world...

The muddy, pooled footprints sporadically scattered throughout this trodden, barren earth, mirror the murky darkness of the night sky and the eerie stillness is unnerving. Curious, I continue to trudge, awkwardly stumbling on the uneven ground. Though my path is somewhat lit by the moons welcome albeit dim glow, each footstep brings with it the gripping feeling of the darkest of fears— the fear of the unknown. I don’t know what I am walking towards, or even from. Confusion has taken residence within me, for I don’t know how I even came to be in this war-torn place. As I tread further, every one of my senses tells the story of a battle lost. I smell the stench of filth amidst the burned ashes that still smoulder all around me and I can taste the bitterness of defeat. My eyes, of course communicate the context best, with jagged, twisted, barbed wire, tangled all across my route and flickering residuals of all but dampened fires afar. Grenades have been thrown here. Shots have been fired and missiles aimed. Death is what I sense, a deep feeling of utter devastation. It’s in the air. Destruction . Desolation. Desertion. My ears have nothing to add to this inner narrative of ruin. Until, I hear the sound…

I feel incredibly alone in this crowded room and I want to. Undeserving. Unworthy. This is the song I sing to myself. As I study the carpet, watching to see if any fugitive tears actually splash on impact with its fibres, I am convinced that its actually bouncing in time with the beat of the continuous stomping and stamping from dancing feet. I look up, just a little, and glance sidewards towards the majority of the crowd on the other side of the aisle beside me. Surprisingly, even the usually shy ones seem to have emerged from their turtle shells to unreservedly prance for their “Risen King.” I assume they must have all had a very wonderful start to their morning, to match their equally wonderful life. I look back at the ground. I have had a terrible morning, I have had a terrible life.

Excerpt 3 (page 36)

Sheepishly, I tilt my head, smile, nod and am excitedly whisked away into an exhilarating escapade of perfect, united movements to the music. Waves of love wash over me as I am gently swayed, lovingly held and gracefully guided throughout the dance. An indescribable, unshakeable peace ripples through my body. There is a sense of innocence within my heart and feeling somewhat like a little child being steered through every step, a confidence and a contentment begins to fill my being. I so willingly follow His lead and there is no doubt that should I stumble, He will most graciously correct me. I do not stumble. Every step, every twist, every twirl is perfect. There is such strength in His arms as He holds my upper back so firm and strong, His elbow positioned so perfectly straight. Yet there is softness in the hand that holds mine. Such a strong sense of security emanates from him and His unconditional love just pours out, all over me. As the music quietens, ever so tenderly, I am aided into a finishing incline and with full trust, I lean back, capturing a glistening shimmer from my beloved’s beautiful brown eyes. I encapsulate the moment like a photograph and promise myself to treasure it forever.

I lift my head high and gaze upon the man, to whom the voice belongs. His hair hangs, wet and matted, saturated in blood. His head, bowed. Upon it, deeply digging into his forehead is a crown made from thorny, bendable stems. Each sharp spike has clearly cut into his scalp for blood has flowed from its multiple wounds. The first stream flows from these wounds. His face is completely encrusted, glazed with blood. From the depths of my core, a sudden outcry involuntarily escapes from my covered mouth. A deep groan of anguish. I look upon his feet. They are almost within reach, should I desire to touch them. My hands shake. I daren’t. A very thick, large nail has been hammered right through both of his tender, naked feet, securing them together. The spike going right through, to the wood behind. His lifeblood seeps. The second stream. I watch as it cascades out and down onto the covering of the map underneath. A third stream pours from his left side. I examine the man’s upper body. Several deep gouges, oozing gashes, and multiple bleeding stripes, perhaps markings from a swift whip are strewn over the entirety of his torso. Glazed, wet, red, raw. His side appears to have been pierced deeply by something very sharp. It is as though he has been stabbed with a sword or a spear. I sob loudly now, at the contemplation of this man’s suffering of such a cruel and brutal beating. Empathy emerges from way down deep inside and groans make their way up and out. The sound bellowing in unison with the steady flow of my tears. The remaining two torrents can be seen gushing from each of his hands, which are also wounded by thick nails, piercing all the way through, just like his feet. I suddenly remember. I have traced those wounds, with my very own fingers...
